Welcome to Lutheran Intentional Village — Upper Pinellas
When people say "it takes a village," they don't mean just to raise a child; it also takes a village to help each other.
The Village Movement is a grassroots effort that is changing the way seniors live and age. In more than 200 communities across the country, friends and neighbors have joined together to enable older adults to "age in place" in their homes and in the neighborhoods they know and trust.
The Village concept began in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood in 2001, when a group of residents founded a nonprofit called Beacon Hill Village to assist with daily tasks that often force older Americans to give up their homes and move to retirement communities.
Villages are membership-driven, non-profit organizations, run by volunteers and sometimes paid staff. Villages coordinate access to services such as transportation, home repairs, computer assistance, social, educational, and wellness activities. Most often, volunteers provide the more common services. For services that require professional help, some Villages can provide the names of vetted vendors who often offer discounts to members.
What is LIV-UP?
LIV-UP is Lutheran Intentional Village - Upper Pinellas. Our Village is a caring community that believes we are to love God with all our heart and our neighbor as ourselves. We strive to "pay it forward" so older adults can remain in their own homes safely and stay engaged in the community.
LIV-UP serves as a virtual village in Upper Pinellas County and is comprised mainly of volunteers who provide various services that help adults age 55 and older successfully "age-in-place." LIV-UP's service area for 2024 is between Ulmerton Road on the south and Tampa Road on the north. This area is loosely bounded by Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (Largo) on the south and by Faith Lutheran Church (Dunedin) on the north.
Other participating churches near the center of our service area include St. Paul's on Gulf to Bay, First Lutheran on Nursery and Grace Lutheran on N. Highland in Clearwater. We plan to expand the LIV-UP service area with additional churches, resulting in a larger and wider volunteer base that can help even more 55+ adults.
LIV-UP is a project of ALOA Florida Region (Adult Lutherans Organized for Action, a 501(c)3 organization). For more than 25 years, ALOA has existed as an inter-Lutheran social ministry organization affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). ALOA is recognized by Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS) and has as its mission to equip, celebrate and serve the growing older population both in the church and in the larger community.
Who Are Our Sponsors?
LIV-UP is pleased to have the help of several sponsors, including Pinellas Community Foundation Faith Mission Grant, Florida-Bahamas Synod Together in Mission, and the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Endowment Board.
